“Then Mary said, ‘Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.’ And the angel departed from her.”
— Luke 1:38 (NKJV)
Two people, two divine announcements, two different responses. Zacharias, a priest, and Mary, a humble young woman, were both visited by the angel Gabriel with news that would change their lives. When Zacharias was told that he and his wife Elizabeth would bear a son, John the Baptist, he doubted. His mind was preoccupied with human limitations—age, biology, and impossibility. But when Mary heard that she would conceive Jesus, the Son of God, she responded with faith, despite the profound uncertainty that lay ahead.
Zacharias’ news should have been joyful—he and Elizabeth had long been childless. Yet doubt clouded his heart. Mary’s news, however, could have been troubling. She faced the risk of public judgment, the possibility of losing Joseph, and the uncertainty of raising a son who would change the world. But instead of resisting, she embraced the will of the Lord, considering herself a servant of His divine plan.
Mary’s unwavering faith stands as an example to all who struggle with life’s uncertainties. When God calls us to something difficult, when His plans challenge our expectations, will we resist, or will we respond as she did?
God still speaks. He still reveals His plans and purposes. Some callings may stretch us, test our courage, or lead us into unknown paths. But when His message comes, may we, like Mary, humbly say:
“Let it be to me according to your word.”
