“Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.”
— Matthew 10:39 (NIV)
This verse from Matthew 10:39 presents a profound truth about the nature of life and the choices we make. Jesus reveals that there are two fundamental paths we can follow: one centered on self-interest and worldly gain, and the other devoted to service in His name. The decision we make carries eternal consequences.
If we choose to live life according to our own desires—pursuing personal ambitions, material wealth, and fleeting pleasures—we ultimately lose what matters most. A life built solely on self-interest is hollow and unsatisfying, leaving the soul unfulfilled. While one may achieve great success and even gain the whole world, the price of such a life is the loss of one’s soul (Mark 8:36). No amount of wealth, prestige, or earthly fulfillment can replace the deep, abiding joy that comes from knowing and serving Christ.
On the other hand, if we surrender our personal ambitions and dedicate our lives to Jesus Christ and His Kingdom, we discover the true meaning of life. This path prioritizes God’s will above personal desires, placing service, faithfulness, and obedience to Him at the forefront. Unlike the pursuit of worldly pleasure, which leads to frustration and emptiness, living for Christ brings a sense of deep fulfillment and purpose. Though this choice may come at the cost of worldly possessions, reputation, or even life itself, it secures something far greater—eternal life in Christ. In extreme cases, one may even be called to martyrdom for the sake of the gospel, yet even then, the reward is everlasting life in the presence of God.
Apart from Christ, the search for meaning and purpose in life is futile, like chasing after the wind (Ecclesiastes 2:11). The world offers distractions that promise fulfillment but ultimately lead to disappointment. It is only in surrendering to Jesus that true life is found. As followers of Christ, we must regularly examine our priorities and ask ourselves: Are we living to satisfy selfish desires, or are we living in service to our King?
May we always choose the life that is found in Him.
